                         What Is Longtec

Longtec is a prolonged-release tablet formulation of oxycodone hydrochloride, specifically designed for the management of moderate to severe pain in adults. Each Longtec tablet contains 5 mg of oxycodone hydrochloride, which is equivalent to 4.5 mg of oxycodone. The tablets are light blue, round, and convex, marked with “OC” on one side and “5” on the other.

Indications

Treatment of moderate to severe pain in patients with cancer.
Management of post-operative pain.
Severe pain that necessitates the use of a strong opioid.

Dosage and Administration

Longtec tablets should be administered at 12-hour intervals. The dosage is tailored based on the severity of the patient’s pain and their previous history with analgesics. It is crucial to start with the lowest effective dose and titrate according to individual patient needs.

Starting Dose: For opioid-naïve patients or those experiencing severe pain uncontrolled by weaker opioids, the usual starting dose is 10 mg every 12 hours. Some patients may benefit from a lower starting dose of 5 mg to minimize side effects.
Titration: Patients should be titrated to achieve adequate pain relief while minimizing adverse reactions. If higher doses are required, increments should be made in 25% to 50% increments.

Adverse Effects

Constipation
Nausea and vomiting
Somnolence
Dizziness

Conclusion

In summary, Longtec serves as an effective option for managing significant pain requiring strong opioids, particularly in adult populations suffering from cancer-related or post-operative pain. Careful consideration regarding dosing, monitoring for side effects, and planning for potential discontinuation are essential components of treatment with Longtec tablets.
